About the Show:
Blue Man Group Orlando takes place inside the Sharp Aquos Theatre located within City Walk and features a trio of blue performers wearing black clothing who are mysterious and skilled in the art of percussion.
Pre-show involves a pair of LED message boards telling you information such as: “All the paper used in this show is 100% recycled,” and eventually as it’s closer to show time instructing the audience to say things like happy birthday, and encourage select people to stand up.
As the show itself begins we see a random introduction with DNA and swirls, eventually the Blue Men themselves come out and start drumming. Of course the trio also has some paint to add to the drum. After some comedic moves including getting paint all overs one of their faces they put a canvas over it and create a masterpiece.
As the show continues we see some skits and audience interaction. Some of the skits involve BMG eating select food items including “Captain Crunch.” One of the more popular food skits involves finding a female audience member and trying to enjoy a romantic dinner with Twinkies. Of course things happen and go wrong but with the BMG everything works out. (*Spoiler* There is something that may cause squeamish people to look away here though.)
The more famous food skit is “Marshmallows and Paint Balls.” This is where the trio finds two items, a large bag of marshmallows and a gumball dispenser filled with watercolor balls. The end result of this skit is a massive feat where one Blue Man is throwing marshmallows into the second’s mouth which has to keep shoving them in as there is no time to remove the ones caught. In between throws the first one is also throwing “gumballs” into the thirds mouth. Who takes the watercolor and sprays it onto a canvas producing a unique watercolor masterpiece, which is actually for sale at the end of the show. To try and top this, the second Blue Man creates an amazing marshmallow sculpture, not for sale.
There are so many skits in this show to remember, including a Zoetrope demonstration showing how animation happens (*spoiler* Strobe lights are used to create this effect) and a random demonstration about the ear’s vocal cords (Ear drumming)
Outside of the audience interactions and skits is some of the more famous aspects of the Blue Man Group themselves, PVC drumming. To imagine this take your standard marimba and keep the set up but instead of wooden keys and wool mallets we have PVC piping and rubber matts. Playing them is the same way and the notes are the same but the sound is the air rushing through rather than the vibration of the wood. Because of this they can play just about ANYTHING on these unique instruments. During the show you will hear Crazy train, Like a virgin,
Another memorable skit is the finale, which is being modified in the new show. A bunch of paper falls from the audience and it’s our job to cover everyone we know in this paper. If you were sitting everywhere but the far ends you would be absolutely covered in paper, this is going on while tubes in the ceiling were spinning and the blue men were encouraging us to play along!
After the show there is a meet and greet with members of the band as well as the Trio of Blue Men in character, photos are encouraged at during this.
Is the show for me:
It all depends as this is not your typical show. Are you interested in Comedy, Percussion, or conformity then this might be for you. Are you interested in sitting and not being part of the show, an intermission, or serious things then this might not be the right option for you. I would suggest going on YouTube and looking up some of their previous public performances on Jay Leno and other talk shows to see if this is something you’re interested in seeing.
Price:
The price for this show can range anywhere with prices starting at $69.00 for normal priced tickets. Tickets can be purchased online through universal Orlando, over the phone, or in person. Annual pass holders can get a discount on tickets but the best deal is the Student Rush Ticket, available only in person at the box office on the day of. For just $35 (plus tax) you can purchase a last minute seat to see a performance, that’s about half off a normal priced ticket. This option requires a student ID and works for any college.
